Residential builders are licensed by The Minnesota Department of Commerce. To inquire about a builder and whether they are registered in Montana call (651) 296-6319 or (800) 657-3978. You may also view information about a cotractor/builder on line, click here. To apply for a residential builders license you must contact the Department of Labor and Industry. 
If you want to build or remodel in the State of Minnesota and your company's gross receipts are over $15,000 in a calendar year you must get a license. Applicants must pass a business/law and trade exam with a minimum score of 70%. You must provide a certifiacte of insurance with limits of $100,000 per occurence, and $10,000 in property damage. Contractors must also provide proof of worker's compensation insurance or exemption thereof. Residential contractors are required to pay into a consumer recovery fund $100 - $200 fee, amount determined by the licensee's annual gross receipts. The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry can help answer questions regarding compliance with the workmans' compensation insurance requirements in Minnesota, you may call them at 1-800-342-5354.
